If you are responsible for lawn maintenance of the property you rent:
- Please keep your yard free of trash and clean up trash left behind by guests in a timely manner
- The city does require that all grass be maintained below 6” in length, please mow your lawn regularly to avoid a correction notice from code enforcement.
- Yard waste is picked up each week and must be in either paper yard waste bags or a container clearly marked “YARD”, stickers to designate a yard container are available for free from the treasurer’s office.
- Do not place yard waste in your trash or recycling containers.
- The city collects leaves each fall, simply rake the leaves into the street on your assigned week. If you live on Colburn, Maple, State, or S. Third, rake your leaves to the curb, do not put them in the road. You can contact the Department of Public Works at (231)592-4015 with any questions regarding leaf pickup.

Trash and recycling collection is in either the alley or street adjoining your property, if you have questions about trash and recycling pickup, contact the utility clerk at (231)592-4005
- Trash is collected each week by republic services, please dispose of only household trash in your trash can. Hazardous materials cannot be collected with regular household trash.
- Please leave 2 feet of space between carts and other objects.
- Republic will also collect large items like couches. Put large items at your regular trash collection location and republic will be by in a few days to collect it. Large items do not get collected with normal household trash so don’t be worried if the large item is there for a few additional days.
- You may have the following large items each week
- 2 Freon free appliances or
- 2 pieces of furniture or
- Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic
- 4 additional bags of garbage
- Recycling collection alternates each week on the east and west side of State St.
- Recycling items must be clean and dry, recyclables do not need to be separated and cannot be placed in a bag.

Before having a fire:
- Contact your landlord for approval, all rental properties must have written approval prior to obtaining a burn permit.
- Contact the fire department at (231)527-0024 for an inspection of your firepit, Fires must meet the following requirements
- Fire pits must have a mesh cover, no larger than ¼”
- Fires must be 25 ft away from any structure
- Adequate precautions taken to prevent fire from spreading
- Fires must be attended at all times and completely extinguished if unattended
- Only brush and tree wood may be burned
A permit is required each time you have a fire. Cooking fires do not require a permit, the presence of food at a fire does not qualify as a cooking fire.
If you experience issues with your rental property
- Contact your landlord first and make them aware of the issue
- If you have the ability to, submit a maintenance request
- If you generally contact your landlord or maintenance by phone, text, or email, contact them directly

- If the repair is not made, contact the Rental Inspector at (231)592-4057.
