Police Officer: Full-Time

The City of Big Rapids is accepting applications and resumes with cover letter for a Full-Time Police Officer.

This is a full-time position, under the general direction of the Police Chief. This position will perform responsible law enforcement and patrol work. Maintain order in the City, respond to citizen complaints, regulate traffic, protect life and property, prevent crime and quell civil disorder. Procure and preserve evidence. Perform related work as required. 

Qualifications required: High school diploma or equivalent, two years of credits from an accredited college or university, MCOLES certified/certifiable, and at least 21 years old.

Applicants will be required to participate in a multi-phase hiring process including but not limited to a written test, oral interview, ride a long and background investigation process.

Starting wages as of January 2023:
$54,084 (without a degree) and $55,167 (with a degree). Applicants with 3 years prior police experience and up-to-date MCOLES license will have a starting wage of $55,820 (without a degree) and $56,938(with a degree). After the probationary period, the employee shall be paid the two (2) year rate of pay. In addition, upon completion of the probationary period, new officers will receive a $1,500 bonus.

Service Officer-Police Division: Part-Time


The City of Big Rapids Public Safety Department-Police Division is looking for part-time Service officers.

Applicants must be motivated, task oriented, with strong people and time management skills and the ability to deal professionally with members of the community. It is preferred, but not required that applicants have work study money available. It is not required that applicants major in criminal justice but is helpful. Duties include parking enforcement, school traffic details, assisting officers with duties including fingerprinting and administering PBT’s, as well as helping administrative staff. An individual interested in aspects of local government is appreciated.

Starting hourly rate is $11.50/hour with a pay increase after 6 months. 12-20 hours per week  between the hours of 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., M-F with occasional adjustments for special events.

Dial-A-Ride Driver: Part-Time


The City of Big Rapids is accepting applications, resumes with cover letter for the Dial-A-Ride Driver position.

This is a part-time position, under the general direction of the Director of Transportation. This position will receive and transmit messages from and to the dispatch control station, transport bus riders from one location to another, and perform related work as required.

Qualifications required: knowledge of the City and a CDL License with “P” Endorsement is preferred. Willing to train the right person.
