Public Policing Academy

Have you ever wanted to see what being a police officer was like? Does it sound fun, interesting or exciting? The Big Rapids Department of Public Safety offers this exact opportunity with its Public Policing Academy (PPA).

During the Public Policing Academy, participants will learn about the responsibilities of a police officer during a routine day on the job.  They will be able to participate in scenario-based training to help them gain a better understanding of what an officer’s job entails.  They will also learn the processes of the criminal justice system. Participants will gain a better understanding of the challenges that are placed on officers every day.

The Public Policing Academy has an application process and specific requirements.  The basic requirements for attending the class are:

  • Participants must complete an online application and submit to a background check
  • Participants must be 18 years of age
  • Participants must not have any felony or violent misdemeanor convictions
  • Attendance is limited to 20 participants

We invite you to come and learn. We are excited to be able to share what being a police officer entails and just how rewarding the job and its sacrifices can be. We hope to see you soon at one of our classes!

If you have the desire to learn more about this program or to do a ride-a-long with one of our officers contact our Community Relations Officer, William Sell at (231) 527-0005.
